Of course one other benefit could be for him to live off the state programme (within the present guidelines)to actually see for himself what is reality and not rhetoric. To give a total insight of what happens for those not working or could it be that he happens to have an automatic pension paid by the state which therefore he would not have to apply for unemployment benefit! As a Professional Politician I would suggest he first gain the real knowledge of peoples lives within the Country, before professing ideas of the far right which in essence have a destructive nature rather than what is required within the Nation in that of building for all to improve peoples lives. My last point is MP's seem to forget the essential point of having been elected to the Post of Member of Parliament which is to Listen and represent the people of the constituency First and their Party Secondary. The People of the Nation give them mandate to represent them therefore their ideas and beliefs should be taken into account before decisions on their behalf are made.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5431263320847347944.post-22131736736714411222012-07-18T07:46:57.833-07:002012-07-18T07:46:57.833-07:00Well argued. I'm livid about the coalition agreement - I understood the point about the parties horsetrading their manifestos to agree a joint path and understood comprimises on original manifestos had to be made - but really - what is the point of the coalition agreement when it can be breached and there's no redress whatsoever? 'no top-down reorganisation of the NHS' it's impossible to imagine a larger one.

Where's the democracy? Read Thomas Frank's The Wrecking Crew about US and takeover and lobbying state of functions by corporations; but applicable here too.
To it's shame the last Labour Government 'opened the door' for many privatisations - so this Govt has just pushed that door wide open, and rewarded it's financial supporters in the process.
We have had the G4S farce, the other day the shambles which is private courts translators etc etc The NHS is the richest picking for private companies - just now we learn that Devon is awarding it's children care services to Virgin. Beggars belief!
The 'revolving door' between the political world, Govt Depts and private industry, of course. helps and speeds up the process.Lancehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09971096229726591325noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5431263320847347944.post-55547594002059833582012-07-12T04:12:35.808-07:002012-07-12T04:12:35.808-07:00Very well written my friend, I have said all along...Very well written my friend, I have said all along that not one #government is run by the MP's for the people, they are mearly puppets with others pulling their strings, mostly one would think the highest bidder. The whole establishment is corrupt to the core, radical change is needed across the board, beginning with the voting system, which in my mind does not work and is totally unfair, individual votes should be counted, and not seats!! I believe that by voting for a person, instead of a party would be far more real and acceptable, letting choice of the people choose his/her people to stand with them, doesnt matter what party they used to belong to, as long as they agree that the peoples interest should come first and foremost. When making cuts they should be made at both ends of the scale not only affecting the vunerable. I totally agree with an overhaul in our benefit system, making it fairer, but believe there is far more #corruption amongst the elite, and the rich than amongst the people they seem to be attacking.Janettehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13662455006829136450noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5431263320847347944.post-71192761033309310072012-07-12T02:37:33.186-07:002012-07-12T02:37:33.186-07:00It still shocks me that this govt have managed to ...It still shocks me that this govt have managed to get away with being so radical, and yet Labour have been so quiet about the privatisation [looting] that's going on - it's as if they're too frightened of the criticism they deserve, that it's best not to raise it, and just fix the mess a bit at a time if they get power back.

An excellent piece btw.@silentfpnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5431263320847347944.post-54397137499214498612012-07-11T15:11:09.976-07:002012-07-11T15:11:09.976-07:00There is a great deal of merit in your argument. C...There is a great deal of merit in your argument. Certainly, what we are seeing is government being run in the interests of a tiny minority; their power and their control of the system is secured by their use of huge wealth that buys them power, in ways that are ugly at best, corrupt at worst.

The thinking behind this way of exercising power is a belief in entitlement, which makes it profoundly ironic that the government likes to denounce the entitlement culture. This is, of course, simply double standards: they don't like the idea of entitlement by the poor to benefits; but they fully approve and support the concept that people like themselves, Eton and Oxford educated, with huge personal wealth, are entitled to rule; that men like Bob Diamond, ruthless and not excessively encumbered with ethical concerns, are entitled to run business.

And, though you're right that this is not UK plc, they do believe the country should be run as a plc, and like Barclays plc under Diamond, run in the interests of those who run it.

Of two points on which I don't agree with you, the minor one is that the TPA is setting the Tory agenda. I believe the TPA reflects the Tory agenda, but the Tories are fully committed, independently, to very much the same agenda. To me, the TPA is just another body that is closely aligned with the Tories.

But the bigger point on which I don't wholly agree is that there has been a coup, that democracy has been overthrown. I believe we still have a democracy here, but heavily distorted by behaviour on the edge of corruption. But to win office, a party still needs to take the support of a large number of people - not necessarily a majority but a large number all the same. If we have a Conservative government now (and LibDem input to this government is minimal, as we have seen with the latest debacle, over Lords reform), that has been made possible by 30% or more of people who should never have anything to do with the Tories, somehow convincing themselves they should vote for them. Why do they do that? Do they believe that they might be able to buy themselves a place at the dinner table? Or at least collect some crumbs from it?

My problem with declaring that there has been a coup is that it excuses some of those people of the need to think through the implication of what they’re doing. Whereas they should be thinking very hard about it and learning the lesson of the damage they do to all of us, including themselves.

But then the best way to focus their minds is to keep the debate. Which is blogs like yours matter so much: they keep up the ferment around key ideas.David Beesonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00393977902379776532noreply@blogger.com
